What is the hub and what are the types of the hub?
What is the Hub?
HUB is old technology hardware device work on the Physical Layer of OSI Model which is used to connect multiple computers with each other in the LAN environment.
contains multiple ports when data arrives at one port it makes the copies of the same data and then send it in all other ports/means HUB doing broadcasting every time.
nonintelligent device because it can’t understand MAC Addresses
One collision domain means one path for sending/receiving data
One broadcast domain
speed is 10 Mbps for data transmission which are divided into all ports equally.
There are three main types of hub
- Passive Hub
- Active Hub
- Intelligent Hub
A passive hub simply combines the signals of the network segment. It does not provide any processing or regeneration of signals. When anyone sends the data then each computer can receive the signal to all computers connected to the hub.
The active hub is a central connecting device such as a computer or router that not only provides connectivity but also regenerates and retransmits the signals sent through it and sends it to the proper destination.
This hub also works as an active hub and also has some extra features as compared to active for example network management, bridging, routing and switching. This intelligent hub gives the remote monitoring and management through a simple network management protocol (SNMP). Which provide
- Setting alerts on problem conditions such as excessive collisions
- Isolating and disconnecting problem computers
- Providing network statistics to remote management consoles
